Design a king size headboard least six inches wider than the mattress on each side to accommodate the space a quilt or bedspread requires. Determine the length and width of the wall space you want headboard to take. Use these dimensions to sketch a design on graph paper, use paper or tracing paper to create a design template. Tape the paper pattern on the wall over the bed to get an idea of the headboard’s size before you start cutting plywood or fabric. Use graph paper to draw more shapes and patterns to the headboard, before making your final choice.

Buy 3/4-inch plywood and covering material such as vinyl, satin or leather. Buy foam padding for short to the headboard surfaces to add cushion to the headboard under cover. Tug the cover to the base of the king size headboard and short tightly along the bottom edge across the entire width, so that the raw edges do not show from the front of the bed. Glue the felt to the back edge of the staples to prevent marks on the floor where the headboard will rest directly on the floor. Determine your preference between ensuring the headboard against the wall or on the bed frame. Use metal hardware brackets to hang the headboard on the wall by attaching the support brackets to the wall studs.
